Dutch-Style Apple Pie Recipe

Ingredients

For the crust:

  • 300 g all-purpose flour

  • 200 g unsalted butter, softened

  • 100 g granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 tablespoons ice-cold water

  • Pinch of salt

For the filling:

  • 6 medium apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust based on apple sweetness)

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Soaked raisins (about 100 g, soaked in water or apple juice)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the raisins:

    • Soak the raisins in warm water or apple juice for at least 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.

  2. Make the crust:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.

    • Add the cold butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

    • In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and add the ice-cold water. Mix well.

    • Gradually add the egg mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until a dough forms.

    • Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

  3. Prepare the filling:

    • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and soaked raisins. Toss until the apples are well coated.

  4. Assemble the pie:

    • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

    • Roll out one disc of dough on a floured surface to fit your pie dish. Place the rolled-out dough into the dish, pressing it gently against the bottom and sides.

    • Fill the crust with the apple mixture, spreading it evenly.

    • Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling. You can either cover the pie completely or cut slits to create a lattice pattern.

    • Seal the edges by crimping with your fingers or a fork. Make a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

  5. Bake the pie:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.

    • If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil.

  6. Cool and serve:

    • Allow the pie to cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will help the filling set.

    • Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
